The glamour and romance of steam diminishes slightly as the day goes on. Disposal of smokebox and ashpan loses its charm at a time when all others are sat in the pub telling tales of the rails. [photo Martin Lloyd, model Pete Greef]

The Romance of Steam
Sunday's project - replacing a broken spring. Darrin on the outside, Philip on one of the jacks, Bill and Philip eventually went underneath. (Oh for a pit that we can use). A late night that night. No chance to get out for a meal, fish and chips from town.

The K1, today 22nd November, crossing over the very spot it stood on on the 9th. It is on its way into Thornaby Depot for tyre turning. Almost certainly the last steam loco - or loco of any type - to use the facility before it closes for ever.

What a difference a few days make
Ground frame in the normal configuration. No 1 lever holds the Annetts key for releasing the Network Rail Esk Valley groundframe. (This key used to be kept in the Grosmont signal box). No 2 lever - spare. No 3 lever release for no 4 lever. No 4 lever operates points 4A & 4B for crossing over between platforms 2 & 3. No 5 lever spare. The plungers for releasing levers 1 & 3 can be seen at the top of the picture. It has been pointed out that the plate on lever 4 is wrong. I should read

The rail grinder was out again today. You can tell when it is working. It approaches in a cloud of dust and sparks. The NYMR have granted Serco facilities for training operators. In exchange the railhead is being ground for free (I'm led to believe).

The P/Way crane in the MPD yard. This crane, on its return to Pickering, will have to be routed through Goathland via the down platform. It will not go under Cowath bridge from the up platform. The crossover, being directly under the bridge, allows the crane to pass under but only diagonally.

The components. Valve body at the top of the picture. Below that is the 'big valve' slide and at the bottom is the 'small valve' slide. The spring for holding it all togather is on the RHS. The 'small valve' allows the supply of steam to the cylinders to be fairly finely controlled whereas the 'big valve' is much more coarse
